P Diddy Court Drama: AirPod Sparks Distraction Debate

P Diddy Court Drama: AirPod Sparks Distraction Debate as the music tycoon Sean “P. Diddy” Combs grabs attention once again—this time not for his music or business ventures, but for what happened inside the courtroom. During a critical legal session without the jury present, Combs was reportedly seen wearing a single AirPod while lawyers and the judge discussed final trial arrangements, raising questions about his focus and courtroom demeanor.
While the jury did not show up to court for this hearing on June 25, witnessing a defendant seem unfocused in court is gaining new attention with this trial ending. With sex trafficking and racketeering charges weighing against them, even slight gestures in court can become significant.
What Happened in Court on June 25?

On Tuesday, June 25, prosecutors and defense attorneys met with Judge Arun Subramanian in the Daniel Patrick Moynihan United States Courthouse in Manhattan to discuss last-minute technical matters before the jury’s return for closing arguments.
As counsel to the law attempted to negotiate the end of the trial, TMZ reports Combs was famously with his head down and an AirPod in his ear looking bored. He wasn’t reprimanded by the judge, which is to say no real regulation of the court was breached. The moment still wasn’t overlooked.
Court reporters and bystanders observed that Combs was largely silent during the session, and it was hard to tell if the AirPod was even connected to a device. The move has led people to wonder if the music mogul is seriously in defense mode, given how terrible the charges against him are.
Charges Against Diddy: A Quick Recap
Sean Combs, known to many as P. Diddy or just Diddy, is facing five serious federal charges across three separate indictments, including:
- Sex trafficking
- Conspiracy to commit racketeering
- Transportation to engage in prostitution across state lines
All these are heavy offenses and come with heavy legal penalties, and Combs can be sent to jail for decades if he is convicted.
Apart from these criminal offenses, Combs is also a target of several civil lawsuits, the majority of which cover charges of sexual misconduct, abuse, and coercion. He denied them all, however, in asserting innocence in and out of court.
Closing Arguments: What’s Next?
The trial is finally getting to the most consequential and definitive phase: closing arguments. They will begin on Thursday, June 26, at 10:00 a.m. EST, with the prosecution going first. The government will speak for around four hours, lunch break taken in between.
The defense will present its closing argument on Friday, June 27, and that will last three hours. The prosecution will then rebut for approximately one hour to counter final arguments presented by the defense.
While prosecutors previously believed jury deliberations would begin on Monday, June 30, there is a chance that they might be conducted as early as Friday afternoon, depending on the speed of the closing arguments.
As the holiday weekend on July 4 approaches, Judge Subramanian has been mindful of the clock and has encouraged both sides of the law to stay within their time constraints.
No Testimony from Diddy, No Witnesses Called
Combs’ attorneys have been operating on a minimalist plan throughout the trial. Taking a curious tack, they did not call a single witness to the stand at all, not even Combs himself. The jury thus heard only the prosecution’s account of things through their witnesses and evidence.
This resolution was not without dispute. The defense requested extra time early in the trial to cross-examine one of the main prosecution witnesses, singer Cassie Ventura, who was also one of the victims. When time for that came, they didn’t use the extra time and kept questioning concise instead.
Legal commentators say that it could be a risky tactic for this very reason. Even if avoiding cross-examination by witnesses reduces the risk of misadventure, it also reduces the jury’s exposure to conflicting accounts which might challenge the prosecution theory of what has happened.
Previous Criticism from the Judge
This is not the first instance that Judge Subramanian has condemned Combs’ conduct within court. Previously during the trial, the judge visibly scolded Combs for attempting to communicate with members of the jury through body language.
“There was a line of questioning where your client was nodding vigorously and looking at the jury,” said Judge Subramanian. “There was a subsequent moment where I looked, and I saw your client looking at the jury and nodding aggressively.”
This is something which can be argued about as attempting to influence the jury, but in an insidious way. It is not necessarily against the law, but is strongly disapproved of and can damage a defendant’s credibility.
Could the AirPod Appearance Hurt His Case?
Legally, Combs’ use of an AirPod in court is not breaching any specific rule of the court, especially since the jury wasn’t there. Nevertheless, legal analysts state that the incident has the potential to damage his reputation.
Public opinion plays a major role in sensationalized trials, especially those that are getting a lot of media coverage. A defendant who appears to be inattentive or disconnected can be viewed as disrespectful, not just to the proceeding, but to the severity of the charges.
“It’s not a good look,” said one former federal prosecutor. “When you’re facing multiple federal indictments, every move you make in court is scrutinized. Jurors remember these moments, even if they weren’t in the room when it happened.”
When Will We Get a Verdict?
There has been nothing from the court on when the jury would return with a verdict. The deliberation may take anywhere from a few hours to several days, depending on the way the jurors would like to look at the arguments and evidence put forth.
One thing is that the stakes cannot be any higher. A guilty verdict on any of the serious counts would radically alter the record of Sean “P. Diddy” Combs, the one-time hip-hop power broker.
