Recordings obtained by People document the moments leading up to the emergency response on the evening of Feb. 23, when authorities were dispatched shortly before 6 p.m. local time to Cosby’s home in Salt Lake City. According to the call log, the victim — identified as a 23-year-old male believed to be Robert Cosby Jr. — was described as “not conscious” and “not breathing” at the time help was requested.

Dispatch notes further indicate that the individual was administered one dose of Narcan, an opioid-reversal medication commonly used in suspected overdose emergencies. Responders characterized the situation as a “full arrest/medical emergency.” Three police units were assigned to the scene. Upon arrival, officers determined that what initially appeared to be an overdose investigation had transitioned into a death investigation, according to prior confirmation from local police.

The tragedy has drawn attention across the entertainment community because Cosby’s mother is widely known for her appearances on The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City, a franchise installment produced by Bravo. In a joint public statement issued Feb. 25, Cosby and her husband, Robert Cosby Sr., expressed grief while emphasizing their religious faith.

“Though our hearts ache, we take comfort in God’s promise and in knowing he is finally at peace,” the statement read. “We are grateful for your prayers and trust in the Lord to carry us through this time of sorrow.”

The message was also shared on social media, prompting an outpouring of condolences from viewers, fellow cast members, and personalities associated with the network. In a separate statement, Bravo described itself as “heartbroken” and extended sympathy to Cosby and her family, calling her “a cherished member” of its television community.

Production on the show’s upcoming seventh season, which had been scheduled to begin filming this week in Utah, has been temporarily suspended in light of the family’s loss.

Cosby’s son had previously spoken publicly about his struggles with substance use, including during an emotional televised conversation with his mother that aired in November 2024. In that discussion, he said his drug use began at age 16 after experimenting with Xanax at a party. He later acknowledged misusing several prescription medications, including ADHD treatments and opioid painkillers, sometimes ingesting large quantities at once.

He also disclosed having tried heroin during a particularly dark period in his life, telling his mother he had once felt so hopeless he “wanted to die.” He credited her support as a major factor in his survival at the time.

In December 2024, Cosby reported that her son had completed a month-long rehabilitation program and described him as emerging “a new person.” Despite that progress, public records show he faced multiple legal challenges in the years that followed.

He was first arrested in 2022 on suspicion of driving under the influence. In September 2025, he was taken into custody again on several charges — including criminal trespassing, assault, and failure to comply with law enforcement — following an incident at the residence of his father-in-law outside Salt Lake City. At the time, his wife, Alexiana, was staying there. Court documents indicated additional counts alleging violation of a judicial order.

Alexiana filed for divorce on Nov. 24, 2025, after three years of marriage. In later interviews, Cosby said the arrest stemmed from an episode in which she and her husband had moved their daughter-in-law out of their home, after which the couple secretly reunited. She said the legal consequences, though painful, may ultimately have helped her son recognize the seriousness of his circumstances.

Later that same month, Robert Jr. was arrested again on accusations that he breached a pretrial protective order. He ultimately pleaded guilty to eight of 14 charges; the remaining six misdemeanors were dismissed. He was released from jail Feb. 3 after receiving a sentence that included 36 months of probation and 75 hours of community service.

At a reunion special for the reality series aired in January, Cosby addressed her son’s legal difficulties, saying she believed he was in a safer environment and not using drugs. She described stepping back to allow him to learn from his experiences, even if the process was painful to witness as a parent.

Just two weeks before his death, Cosby shared a photograph of her son on social media accompanied by a brief message expressing love and faith.

The circumstances surrounding Robert Jr.’s death remain under investigation. Authorities have not yet released an official cause of death, and no additional findings have been made public.
