Bondi Beach Hero Recovering After Surgery for Stopping Gunman
Journey Tribune – A Sydney fruit shop owner who risked his life to disarm one of the attackers during a mass shooting at Bondi Beach is recovering in hospital after undergoing surgery for gunshot wounds, his family said on Monday, as Australia grappled with the aftermath of one of the deadliest attacks in its modern history.
Ahmed al Ahmed, 43, was identified by witnesses and on social media as the civilian who charged at an armed attacker during the chaos of Sunday afternoon’s shooting, wrestled a rifle from him, and forced him to the ground. The attack occurred during a Jewish holiday celebration at the popular seaside location in Sydney’s eastern suburbs.
Footage circulating online showed al Ahmed taking cover behind parked vehicles as gunfire rang out, before seizing a moment to confront the gunman from behind. In the struggle, al Ahmed was shot in the arm and hand, according to family members, but his actions are widely credited with preventing further loss of life.
Speaking to local broadcaster 7News Australia, Al Ahmed’s cousin, Mustafa, said doctors had informed the family that he was in stable condition following surgery.
“He is a hero, he is a hundred percent hero,” Mustafa said. “Still, he is in the hospital,l and we don’t know exactly what’s going on inside, but we hope he will be fine.”
Australian police said on Monday that the attack was carried out by a 50-year-old man and his 24-year-old son, who allegedly opened fire on the crowd gathered for the celebration. Fifteen people were killed in the attack, making it the country’s worst mass shooting in almost three decades and sending shockwaves through the nation.
Authorities have not publicly disclosed a motive, but confirmed that the victims were attending a Jewish community event, prompting heightened security measures around religious sites across Sydney and other major cities. Police officers were seen standing guard at Bondi Beach on Monday, as investigators continued to examine the scene and gather evidence.
The shooting has reignited national debate over public safety and extremism, even as Australia is widely regarded as having some of the world’s strictest gun laws. Prime Minister and state leaders expressed condolences to the victims’ families and praised the courage shown by bystanders who intervened during the attack.
Tributes for Al Ahmed poured in from political leaders and members of the public in Australia and around the world, with many describing his actions as extraordinary and selfless.
U.S. President Donald Trump described al Ahmed as “a very, very brave person,” saying his intervention saved many lives. Chris Minns, the Premier of New South Wales, called him “a genuine hero” and said the widely shared video of the confrontation was “the most unbelievable scene I’ve ever seen.”
Community leaders also praised al Ahmed’s actions as a powerful example of courage and solidarity in the face of violence. Social media users across platforms hailed him as a symbol of hope amid tragedy, with many calling for official recognition of his bravery once he recovers.
In a sign of widespread public support, a GoFundMe campaign established to assist Al Ahmed and his family raised more than A$200,000 (approximately $132,900) within hours of being launched. The largest single donation came from U.S. billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman, who contributed A$99,999 and shared the fundraiser on his X account, encouraging others to support the family.
Friends and neighbors described Al Ahmed, a well-known fruit shop owner in Sydney, as a quiet and hardworking member of the community who never sought attention. Several said they were not surprised by his actions, describing him as someone who would instinctively help others in danger.
As Al Ahmed continues to recover from his injuries, Australia remains in mourning for the 15 people who lost their lives in the attack. Flags were lowered at several public buildings, and vigils were planned across Sydney to honor the victims and show solidarity with the Jewish community.
For many Australians, the image of an unarmed civilian confronting a gunman has become one of the defining moments of the tragedy — a stark reminder of both the horror of violence and the extraordinary bravery that can emerge in its midst.
