Cogburn’s First Foal Sparks Major Buzz at WinStar Farm

cogburn’s first foal sparks major buzz at winstar farm

Journey Tribune – WinStar Farm’s Grade 1-winning sprinter and North American record-setter Cogburn has marked an important milestone in his young stud career with the arrival of his first reported foal. On Jan. 4, 2026, a filly out of the Oasis Dream mare Posset was born at Goodwin Farm near Paris, Kentucky, signaling an encouraging start for one of the most electrifying turf sprinters of recent years.

The filly was bred by Jay Goodwin, David Rogers, and Brooke Buffkin, a partnership that has combined proven bloodlines with one of the fastest stallions ever to compete at the highest level in North America. Early impressions from her breeders have been emphatically positive, underscoring the optimism surrounding Cogburn’s transition from the racetrack to the breeding shed.

“This is a really good filly,” said Goodwin shortly after the birth. “She bounced right up and was whipping around the paddock in no time. We love fast horses.” While such early assessments are naturally informal, they echo the expectations attached to a filly whose pedigree blends elite European turf blood with cutting-edge American speed.

The filly’s dam, Posset, is by Oasis Dream and is a full sister to Juddmonte’s outstanding racemare Midday, one of the most accomplished turf performers of her generation. Midday earned more than $3.4 million during a glittering career that included multiple Group 1 victories and a memorable triumph in the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf (G1T). That level of class on the female side adds considerable depth to the filly’s genetic profile and enhances her long-term value, both as a potential racehorse and as a future broodmare.

Cogburn himself brings an equally compelling resume to the equation. A son of the immensely popular and influential stallion Not This Time, Cogburn established himself as the fastest Grade 1-winning sprinter in the world in 2024. His most celebrated performance came in the Jaipur Stakes (G1T) at Saratoga Race Course, where he delivered a performance that instantly entered the record books. Covering 5 1/2 furlongs on turf in a blistering:59.80, Cogburn shattered the previous North American record of 1:00.21, set in 2019. The effort earned him a towering Beyer Speed Figure of 114, further cementing his reputation as an elite speed horse.

That victory was no isolated flash of brilliance. Cogburn returned in his next start to capture the $2 million Turf Sprint Stakes (G2T) at Kentucky Downs in similarly authoritative fashion. Racing over six furlongs on turf, he stopped the clock in 1:07.68, narrowly missing yet another course record. The consistency and repeatability of his top-level performances were hallmarks of his career and traits that breeders now hope he will pass on to his offspring.

Over the course of 16 lifetime starts, Cogburn finished first or second on 11 occasions, a testament not only to his raw speed but also to his durability and competitive spirit. He retired with earnings of $2,422,630, racing in the colors of Clark Brewster, William and Corinne Heiligbrodt, and under the expert guidance of Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen. He is produced from the stakes-winning mare In a Jif, by Saintly Look, further reinforcing the strength of his female family.

Interest in Cogburn as a stallion was immediate upon his retirement. In his initial season at stud last year, he covered an impressive book of 194 mares, reflecting both his commercial appeal and the industry’s appetite for elite turf speed. Breeders were drawn not only to his race record but also to his physical profile and pedigree, anchored by Not This Time, one of the most sought-after stallions in North America.

Cogburn will stand the 2026 breeding season at WinStar Farm near Versailles, Kentucky, for an advertised fee of $25,000, stands and nurses. With his first foal now on the ground and early reports proving encouraging, anticipation is building around the potential of his inaugural crop.

While it will be several years before Cogburn’s progeny reach the racetrack, the arrival of his first filly represents a symbolic and tangible beginning. Combining exceptional speed, Grade 1 class, and a deep international pedigree, this foal embodies the promise that breeders and racing fans alike hope will define Cogburn’s legacy as a stallion.
