Jerry Jones Says Kenny Clark Was Key in Micah Parsons Trade

Jerry Jones says Kenny Clark was key in Micah Parsons trade, as the Dallas Cowboys finally broke their silence after sending the star linebacker to the Green Bay Packers. In a press conference held Thursday night (Aug 28), the Cowboys owner revealed that Clark’s inclusion was a major factor behind the blockbuster deal.

Jerry Jones Opens Up in a Lengthy Press Conference

True to his style, Jerry Jones dominated the press conference. After being asked a single question, he went on to speak for more than 11 minutes straight.

Jones admitted that the Cowboys were still undecided about the trade as late as Thursday morning. That explains why Clark was still seen practicing with the Packers before the deal was finalized.

We needed someone who could truly solidify our run defense. Kenny Clark provides that,” said Jones.

Cowboys’ Focus on Run Defense

The Cowboys made it clear they were only willing to move Parsons if they received a top defensive tackle in return. According to Jones, Clark fit perfectly into their needs.

Dallas has struggled against the run, and with Mazi Smith failing to live up to expectations, the team badly needed reinforcement. Earlier this offseason, the Cowboys also gave Osa Odighizuwa an $80 million extension, but they still felt short on reliable depth.

Stephen Jones, executive vice president and Jerry’s son, added an important perspective:

You can manufacture pass rush, but you can’t manufacture run defense. That’s why Clark is so valuable.”

Parsons Wanted to Stay, But Money Came First

Jones also addressed the bigger picture behind Parsons’ departure. He admitted the team had considered a trade since the spring but denied reports that they placed Parsons on the trade block just to raise his value.

Parsons, according to multiple reports, wanted to remain a Cowboy but prioritized securing a new contract. Jerry Jones said the team could have signed him, but ultimately chose the trade.

Make no mistake, we knew we could sign Micah. But we decided to go with a trade,” Jones explained.

Jones also noted that he would continue his hands-on approach to player negotiations, recalling how he once pressured Michael Irvin into signing an extension.

Farewell to Kenny Clark’s Packers Legacy

For Packers fans, Clark’s departure ends an impressive run. Drafted 27th overall in 2016, he spent nine seasons, ten offseasons, and earned three Pro Bowl selections in Green Bay.

Although he was projected as a potential cap casualty in 2026, Jerry Jones made it clear that Clark wasn’t just a throw-in—he was a foundational piece of the trade.

Now, the spotlight turns to Week 4, when Micah Parsons will face off against his former team in what promises to be one of the most anticipated matchups of the season.
